Non-Public School / Virtual Student Participation
In the spring of 2023, the state of Kansas passed legislation providing the opportunity for Non-Public and Virtual School Students
to participate in KSHSAA sponsored activities at their respective local public school.
Non-public and virtual school students are only eligible in the district (USD) and attendance area where they reside.
Those students in grades 7-12 who are primarily enrolled in non-public schools may be deemed eligible for participation at their local public school upon the completion, submission, and approval of the Eligibility Application per House Substitute for Senate Bill 113.
Any parent/guardian of a non-public school student seeking participation eligibility at a Shawnee Mission School District school must establish an account and submit the necessary application material through the KSHSAA parent portal and to the Shawnee Mission School District.
KSHSAA Enrollment Dates by Activity:
Fall / Yearly Activities - enroll July 15 or later
Winter Activities - enroll October 15 or later
Spring Activities - enroll February 1 or later
Non-public school students seeking eligibility must complete all Kansas High School Activities Association (KSHSAA)
and local public-school requirements including, but not limited to:
• Completed Pre-Participation Physical exam prior to the first practice with such exam completed annually after May 1
(KSHSAA Handbook Rule 7-1-(1-7) ).
• Concussion Education.
• Heat acclimatization (fall activities only).
• Parent/Guardian participation in parent/guardian team meeting.
• Submission of immunization records consistent with KSA 72-6262.
• Participation fees (if charged for all students by the public school).
• Other requirements as determined by the local public school Board of Education.
(if required for all students – i.e., required enrollment in a class to participate)

STEPS TO FOLLOW FOR REGISTRATION PRIOR TO PARTICIPATINGPlease note, school of participation is based on your physical address:
- Student and Parent/Guardian need to apply to the KSHSAA through their parent portal.
- KSHSAA will then verify address with the appropriate local school.
To find your appropriate local Shawnee Mission School, student and parent should use the school finder tool: https://www.smsd.org/about/boundary-maps - Student and Parent/Guardian will need to verify address with the local Shawnee Mission school.
- SMSD residency requirements required to apply for enrollment or participation. Detailed definitions of residency are provided in the student section of the SMSD Board of Education policy manual (Student Admissions To/Withdrawals From - School Board Policy JBC).
Additional explanation of the policy can be provided by a building principal. - Parent/Guardian and Student should begin the "New Student Enrollment" process online.

- Birth Certificate
- Immunization Record
- Parent Photo ID

- Wait for KSHSAA approval and then be prepared to contact the local Shawnee Mission school and then complete the next steps:
- Complete enrollment/registration with the Shawnee Mission School District where a Skyward account will be established and a password provided.
- Complete the Skyward online verification forms required by all students in the Shawnee Mission School District and the online athletic packet if participating in athletics.
- Turn in the KSHSAA Pre-Participation Physical Examination form to the school and complete any other activity specific forms if needed
(i.e. transportation form) - Pay any required course and activity fee and receive a student school ID
