Non-Public School / Virtual Student Participation

VIRTUAL OR NON-PUBLIC STUDENT ENROLLMENT IN INTERSCHOLASTIC ACTIVITIES Enrollment Dates:
High School eligibility is approved on a seasonal basis and families must reapply each season.

  • Fall Season / Yearly Activities - enroll July 1 or later
  • Winter Season Activities - enroll October 1 or later
  • Spring Season Activities - enroll February 1 or later

Middle School student eligibility is approved once and applies for all seasons.

  • Parent/Guardian need to apply to the Kansas State High School Activities Association through the virtual and non-public student eligibility application
  • Parent/Guardian need to enroll their student in the Shawnee Mission School District as an athletic/activity participant only.
    • A SMSD Skyward account will be created.
      • Please be prepared to provide the following documents with your Shawnee Mission enrollment application:
        • Birth Certificate
        • Proof of Residency
        • Immunization Record
        • Parent Photo ID
        • Other information may be required
  • Wait for KSHSAA approval 
  • Once approved, complete the required Skyward online verification forms required by the SMSD 
  • For athletics, a KSHSAA Pre-Participation Physical Examination form and a KSHSAA Concussion & Head Injury Information Release form are required before participation in a practice or competition. 
  • Other forms may also be required depending on the sport/activity
  • Pay any required course and activity fee.
  • Student should stop by the school's main office and pick up a school ID

Background information:
In the spring of 2023, the state of Kansas passed legislation providing the opportunity for Non-Public and Virtual School Students to participate in KSHSAA sponsored activities at their respective local public school. 
Non-public and virtual school students are only eligible in the district (USD) and attendance area where they reside.  
Those students in grades 7-12 who are primarily enrolled in non-public schools may be deemed eligible for participation at their local public school upon the completion, submission, and approval of the Eligibility Application per House Substitute for Senate Bill 113.  

Non-public school students seeking eligibility must complete all Kansas High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) and local public-school requirements including, but not limited to:
Completed Pre-Participation Physical exam prior to the first practice with such exam completed annually after April 1 (KSHSAA Handbook Rule 7-1-(1-7) ).
Concussion Education.
Heat acclimatization (fall activities only).
Parent/Guardian participation in parent/guardian team meeting.
Submission of immunization records consistent with KSA 72-6262.
Participation fees (if charged for all students by the public school).
Other requirements as determined by the local public school Board of Education.
