Open Enrollment Eligibility
OPEN ENROLLMENT
- Open Enrollment is a state level policy that allows students to select and transfer to a school of their choice, rather than attend a school based on where they live.
- The Kansas statute allows districts to have an application window in which to apply. Academic Open Enrollment applications are accepted Jan 1 - June 15 and applicants will be notified of acceptance or denial on or before July 30. See more information about how to enroll here.
- The Open Enrollment opportunity is for educational choice and may affect your student's eligibility for interscholastic athletic and activity participation. The Kansas State High School Activities Association governs eligibility for interscholastic activities in grades 7-12. See frequently asked questions in regard to Open Enrollment and Eligibility. Here are a few key points:
- As families are choosing to change schools, the transfer rule would apply. In most cases, the student would be eligible at the non-varsity level for one year at high school and eighteen weeks at the middle/junior high level.
- Students may participate in school summer activities only in the school they will be attending in the fall. Thus, in Shawnee Mission, a student would need to wait until their enrollment has been approved, around July 30th, to participate in summer activities.
