Jeri Hile, vision specialist for the Shawnee Mission School District, is the 2018 Teacher of the Year for excellence in Braille Instruction as named by the Braille Institute.
Hile is a full-time teacher for students who are visually impaired in the Special Education department. She is being recognized for her dedication, innovation and creativity in teaching students who are visually impaired or blind.
“Jeri Hile is a gifted teacher and a valuable role model for students,” said Peter A. Mindnich, president, Braille Institute. “She is an innovative educator who promotes Braille literacy through creative lesson plans and technology.”
Larry Martin, second-grade teacher at Belinder Elementary, is the winner of the 2018 Jeopardy!Teachers Tournament.
The winning episode aired Friday as Martin watched with students and staff at Belinder Elementary School. He was named champion of the two-week tournament and earned a $100,000 prize.
Martin told the crowd at Belinder the experience had been surreal and said that every teacher should receive this level of attention and praise. He thanked the school community for their support. He also told the crowd that the next issue of his students’ newspaper will include an interview with Jeopardy host Alex Trebek.
The Shawnee Mission Summer Enrichment program offers a variety of classes for children who will enter grades 1 through 8 in the fall of 2018. Classes are varied and include art, music, technology, science, and theatre. These opportunities allow students to remain engaged throughout the summer through a variety of activities in a safe and structured environment. Classes will start on June 11 and continue through July 27 at SM South High School, 5800 W. 107th St. The program is also offered to support working families as children can arrive at 7:30 a.m. for early care and take a morning class. Then the children eat lunch, play at recess, and take an afternoon class. Late care is offered following the afternoon sessions until 5:30 p.m. All children are welcome to enroll, whether they live inside Shawnee Mission School District boundaries or not.
