Board Names Next SMSD Superintendent
Shawnee Mission School District

At its meeting on Monday, February 22, 2021, the Shawnee Mission School District (SMSD) Board of Education announced the selection of Dr. Michelle Hubbard as the next district superintendent. Currently, Dr. Hubbard serves as Deputy Superintendent.

Board President Heather Ousley issued the following statement on behalf of the Board:

“The Board of Education is pleased to confirm Dr. Michelle Hubbard as our District’s next Superintendent. Dr. Hubbard has played an integral role in the creation and implementation of our community’s Strategic Plan, and her knowledge and expertise as we execute the bond reaffirms the District’s deep desire to keep fidelity with our five year goals.  Dr. Hubbard’s leadership, strength, and commitment to children will serve the Shawnee Mission School District well in the years to come.”

Dr. Hubbard is in her 6th year with the district, where she served as an associate superintendent until her promotion to Deputy Superintendent in January, 2021. Previously, she served for seven years as superintendent in the Turner School District, where she also was an assistant superintendent. Before moving to the central office, she served as the high school principal, and an elementary school principal, and as an assistant principal at the high school. She began her career as a teacher, working for six years in the Turner School District and in Oklahoma as a special education teacher.

“I am honored to be chosen to serve as the Superintendent,” Dr. Hubbard said. “I’m excited to get started working to champion the district’s strategic plan, foster and strengthen relationships, cultivate a strong culture, and continue to build collaborative and high-performing academic and administrative teams.”

Dr. Hubbard is a 17-year resident of the district and is a strong advocate for the district’s strategic plan. She brings to the job a deep understanding of instruction, along with a commitment to meet the needs of all learners.

“I know and believe in the strength of this community,” Dr. Hubbard expressed. “Our mission will be to continue to strengthen the learning experience so all students can achieve their full potential. I look forward to working with the Board of Education, SMSD staff, families and students, to carry out the commitments our community made through the strategic plan, so we can remain SMSD strong.”

Dr. Hubbard will replace outgoing superintendent Dr. Michael Fulton, who announced his resignation in December, 2020. Dr. Fulton is in his third year as superintendent. Dr. Hubbard will assume the superintendency in July, 2021. Dr. Fulton and Hubbard will work closely together through the remainder of this school year in preparation for the transition and to ensure stable, ongoing implementation of the strategic plan.
