Books for children in Pre-kindergarten through 12th grade were donated by the Johnson County Library to the Shawnee Mission School District. The books were distributed to students at the four Pick Up and Go Meal sites this summer. Since the library was unable to host their summer reading program, they donated the books to school districts so books could reach children.
Each meal site was provided with book bags, summer program resources supported by the Johnson County Library, as well as brand new paperback reading books. The books include picture books and early readers all the way to teen fiction. Remaining books from each site may be distributed at additional dates or shared with our Title schools as they prepare for family reading activities in the fall Dr. Christy Ziegler, Chief of Student Services noted. “We are grateful for the partnership with the Johnson County Library and look forward to many more possibilities for partnership in the future.”
The books include this year and previous year award winners, Sue Wiley-Carter, librarian at Santa Fe Trail and volunteer shared. “There are some really good books and watching a child’s eyes light up with excitement from receiving a new book is truly a gift.”
On a recent Monday at Hocker Grove, families were treated to Pickup and Go Meals, complimentary books, and jazz music from students and alumni from Shawnee Mission Northwest. Doug Talley, band director and saxophone player, led a group of five musicians including: Cora Manica – keyboard, Evan Borberg – bass, Colby Johnston – trumpet and David Borberg – drums.
“Between the meals, music, and books, this is as good as it gets in quarantine,” Heather Ousely, Board of Education president and volunteer said.
