Sunmiek Bhathal came to the United States in 2012 from India. She entered high school in Oklahoma and struggled to finish as she did not understand English. Her family moved to Kansas in 2019 and following a four-year gap from school, she enrolled in Project Finish. Her husband was still in India, and she was raising a small daughter with the help of her family.
Bhathal discovered Project Finish from a magazine published by the Shawnee Mission School District (SMSD) that is mailed to every home in the school district. Project Finish is an online diploma completion opportunity for Kansas residents 18 or older. She called Sarah Finocchario, Project Finish Teacher, who explained the program, answered questions, and helped her enroll.
In the following nine months Bhathal completed 12 classes in the subjects of English, math, and science. She enjoyed the English classes the most because they helped her improve her English skills and fluency, she shared.
“Even though the material is difficult for a student with limited English proficiency, Sunmiek persevered and came to the lab when it was still open in early 2020,” Finocchario noted.
Bhathal would encourage potential students to enroll in Project Finish because the hours are flexible, there is no pressure, and students can learn at your own pace. She specifically liked the ability to retake a quiz when she had not received a passing score.
Bhathal is currently taking two classes and has one more class to complete to earn her SMSD diploma. She hopes to achieve this in the next couple of months. Bhathal would like to go to college and pursue a degree in Interior Design.
Project Finish enrollment is now open and is by appointment only due to COVID-19 restrictions. Email Sarah Finocchario at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 913-993-9563 to make an appointment.
