The Kansas City Star and Kansas City Royals announced this year’s Scholar Athletes from across the Kansas City metropolitan area this summer. Here is a look at the honorees from the Shawnee Mission School District and highlights of their accomplishments:
Tess Roman, Shawnee Mission East
Accolades include:
4.76 GPA
Four golf letters
Three basketball letters
Three track letters
Played on two state champion teams
Four-time first-team all-state selection
Four combined top-10 finishes in track and field events
Shawnee Mission East students Emmett Hill and Brady Fankhauser also were nominated as 2022 Scholar Athletes.
Josie Tyrrell, Shawnee Mission North
Accolades include:
3.94 GPA on 4.0 scale
Four cross country letters
State qualifier and all-conference selection
Four track letters State qualifier and all-state in 4x800 relay
Shawnee Mission North students Jake Schneider and Owen Dooley also were nominated as 2022 Scholar Athletes.
Ella Mackiewicz, Shawnee Mission Northwest
Accolades include:
4.47 GPA on weighted 4.0 scale
Four track and field letters
Three basketball letters
Three volleyball letters
Finished second at state in high jump and 4x400 relay and third in 400 in 2021

Three-time sub-state championship team member
Emma Thurston, Shawnee Mission South
Accolades include:
4.12 GPA on weighted 4.0 scale
Four soccer letters
Three basketball letters
Second-team all-state and first-team all-conference in 2021
Two-time all-conference honorable mention pick.
Shawnee Mission South student Lloyd Dodson also received a nomination.
Tyler Vandeventer, Shawnee Mission West
Accolades include:
4.78 GPA on weighted 4.0 scale
Three soccer letters, one all-conference honor
Three tennis letters
One letter in basketball and bowling
Shawnee Mission West students Sameen Basha and Ryan Buckner also were nominated.
