Happy National Parents as Teachers Day!

Happy National Parents as Teachers Day!
Shawnee Mission School District

Today, Nov. 8, 2021, we join communities across the country recognizing the educational opportunities provided by Parents as Teachers.

We celebrate Shawnee Mission School District Parents as Teachers (SMSD PAT) on National Parents as Teachers Day!

SMSD PAT promotes early development, learning, and the health of children by supporting and engaging their parents and caregivers. The SMSD is home to a Blue-Ribbon affiliate Parents as Teachers program, meaning it is one of the top affiliates in the national PAT network. The program serves families with children ages 0 to 36 months.

Our community is thrilled to recognize and celebrate all of our families and parent educators who are a part of SMSD Parents as Teachers, Dr. Leigh Anne Neal, chief of early childhood learning and sustainability shared.

“Our parent educators provide parents with information and support around child development in order that parents have the tools and resources necessary to feel confident and affirmed in their role as parents and as first teachers of their child(ren),” she added.

Throughout the year PAT helps parents maximize efforts by providing information such as:

·                How to understand meaning behind a child’s behaviors

·                How to build parent-child connections

·                Assistance with parenting challenges

The program offers monthly home visits, screenings, group connections, and resources for families.
