National PTA Honors Presented to 2 Shawnee Mission Schools
Shawnee Mission School District

The National PTA recognized two Shawnee Mission schools for strong family-school relationships. Broken Arrow Elementary PTA, and Shawnee Mission North High School PTSA earned the National PTA School of Excellence designation for 2021-2023.

The two Shawnee Mission schools are the only in the state to earn this national 2021-2023 recognition. National PTA presents this in honor of the schools’ commitments to building an “inclusive and welcoming school community where all families contribute to enriching the educational experience and overall well-being for all students,” according to the National PTA website.

The school’s PTA leadership and administration were honored and recognized at a December 2021 Kansas State Board of Education meeting in Topeka.

State board member, Janet Waugh, congratulated both schools, commenting, “It’s great the PTA and schools can work together to accomplish great things and the people that benefit when we all join hands are our kids.”

School community members work together to complete a survey as part of applying for this designation. Through the community survey, an objective and goal must be identified meeting the National PTA standards for family and school partnerships.

Broken Arrow’s school improvement goal and objective was identified to be reducing food insecurity in their school community.  Upon further investigation, it was identified the greater need was for hygiene supplies, clothing, and school supplies. The PTA and school created a resource room to provide these needs, allowing families to access much needed items.

Shawnee Mission North’s objective focused on continuous improvement in family engagement and supporting the arts in education among their community. The PTSA hosted a student-led, community-based fundraiser for the arts focused on visual arts, and a free arts related outreach event for their vertical community.

This is Shawnee Mission North High School PTSAs fourth recognition as a National PTA School of Excellence, demonstrating continuous improvement in family engagement.
