It was another outstanding season for the Shawnee Mission East boys tennis team.
The team earned its third consecutive Kansas State Activities Association (KSHSAA) team championship.
The Lancer team also found success in singles and doubles competition including:
Gregor Wiedeman, sophomore, State Champion in Singles
Graham Faris, junior, Third Place in Singles
The Doubles team of Henry Bair and Jordan Jenkins, seniors, placed seventh.
The Doubles team of Jake Hanson, freshman, and George Kahl, sophomore, placed tenth.
Andy Gibbs, Shawnee Mission East Tennis Coach shared that the team’s approach this year was “one step at a time,” due to having many team members who were new to the game and building their skill.
“The team stepped up and this was especially exciting as they figured it out as the season went along,” Gibbs said.
The championship was the first opportunity for both doubles teams to compete in a state championship. With doubles teams from last year graduating, it gave several players the opportunity to work as a team and grow. “Bair and Jenkins played their best at the state tournament and contributed to the championship win” Gibbs shared.
Wiedeman and Faris had a combined total of only four losses this season, with two of those being to each other. They built on that strong record to finish their winning season.
