SM East Bowling Wins State Title
Shawnee Mission School District

The Shawnee Mission East High School boys bowling team is celebrating a state title.

They are the Kansas State High School Athletic Association (KSHSHAA) 6A Boy’s High School State Bowling Champions. This state championship is the first bowling state title in history for Shawnee Mission East and for the Shawnee Mission School District.

Along with the state accomplishment, SM East bowling coach Fred Elliott has been voted as the Sunflower League Coach of the Year.

“I am so proud of Coach Fred and Coach Tim Brill and the entire team,” Debbie Katzfey, SM East athletic director shared. “They worked hard to achieve this championship and had a super season.”

The team of six includes, seniors, Brady Aebersold, Noah Martin, Griffin O’Neill, Walter Workman, and juniors, Zach Sederquist, and John Shelton.

Coach Elliott contributes the championship to a combination of bowlers wanting to bowl and willing to support and help each other. “The senior team members have had this goal since their sophomore year, so they’ve been working on this for quite some time,” Elliott shared.  “Workman and Aebersold had the leadership and desire to encourage the team to bowl and practice in the off season.”

Workman led the state as the top scoring bowler.  Additionally, Aebersold placed sixth, with Shelton coming in at ninth place.
