The Shawnee Mission East Girl’s swim team claimed second place in the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) 6A Girls State championship in May. The team also has multiple individual and relay accomplishments to celebrate from the state event.
Anne Deedy, senior, was named The Athlete of the Meet at the State Championship, an honor selected by the coaches at the meet. Deedy set new school records and placed first in the 200-yard Individual Medley and the 100-yard breaststroke.
Deedy and Maeve Linscott, senior, were named to the First Team All-State swimmers. Linscott placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 100-yard butterfly. Piper Benjamin, junior, was named to the Second Team All-State, placing fourth in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly.
Two SM East relays, including Deedy, Linscott, and senior Sasha Malik, along with Benjamin and, Francie Garrison, freshman, placed second in the 200-yard medley relay and freestyle relay.
Deedy’s breaststroke time of 1:02:53 automatically qualified her as an All-American. She also earned an All-American consideration time in the 200 individual medley. The All American achievement is given to the top 100 high school swimmers and divers in the United States in each event. Anne was also the HyVee Athlete of the Week on KMBC and received the Children’s Mercy Sports Medicine Center Performance of the Week.
“I haven't had any athlete accomplish this before,” Shawnee Mission East Coach Ian Hutchinson said. “I am very proud of all of their efforts and dedication.”
