Burns & McDonnell announced a team combined of fifth-graders from Mill Creek Elementary School and Good Shepherd School are Top 20 Finalists in the Battle of the Brains competition.

Their proposal for a new exhibit at Science City called “Green Idea- A Pollution Solution” was selected out of 750 proposals submitted by 6,400 students in the Kansas City area.

The grand prize winning team in the competition receives a $50,000 grant and the opportunity to build a permanent exhibit at Science City with Burns & McDonnell professionals.

A public vote counts for 30 percent of the final selection. To vote for the Shawnee Mission Northwest Area Enhanced Learning Team click here. Votes will be tallied until 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 17, 2021. The grand prize winner will be revealed in an awards ceremony in January at Union Station. Voters are able to make their choice once every 24 hours.

The students are instructed by Karen Hayse and Nadine Bennetts, who serve as Gifted Facilitators at Rhein Benninghoven Elementary School.
