Biotechnology Students Preparing for National Competition

Shawnee Mission biotechnology students stood out above the crowd at this year’s regional Junior Science and Humanities Symposium.

They earned four of the five positions that will advance to national competition that will be held in April in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

The following students are advancing to national competition:

Mia Stamos, Shawnee Mission East junior

3rd place

“DNA looping in E. coli: A Novel Mechanism of Gene Regulation”

Erandi Ramirez-Oviedo, Shawnee Mission South senior

4th place

“Rubisco: A New Approach to Carbon Sequestration”

Lydia Dorton, Shawnee Mission East senior

5th place

“The Effect of Palmitoylation on Drug Uptake Transporters in Human Hepatocytes”

The following is a complete list of students selected to present their research at the symposium. Mehania Asir, Tatum Aikin, Lydia Dorton, Ian Ensley, Caleb Gilmore, Tochukwu Obi, Abby West, Olivia Ponnuru, Erandi Ramirez-Oviedo, Mia Stamos and Tayten DeGarmo.

All of these students are enrolled in Shawnee Mission’s Biotechnology Signature Program, taught by Dr. Kenneth Lee and Zulma Pérez-Estrella.
