Friends, family members, and SMSD educators gathered on Friday, May 12, to congratulate all students who are completing their time in Post-High Transitions Services.

This year, eight students were recognized at the event with applause, speeches, and post-event cookies. Each student was presented with a diploma and received a handshake from Board of Education member Jessica Hembree, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Hubbard, Deputy Superintendent Dr. Joe Gilhaus, and Associate Superintendent Dr. David Stubblefield.

Gilhaus delivered the commencement address, highlighting the gifts, talents, laughter and the joy that all of the students brought to school each day. He encouraged all of the students to thank everyone who encouraged them as they worked to receive their education.

“With all of the training you have received and the hard work you will put in –I know your futures will be bright,” Dr. Gilhaus expressed to the students.

As each student was recognized, Amanda Wade, special education coordinator, secondary services shared favorite qualities and memories of each honoree.

Shawnee Mission School District’s Post-High program serves individuals who are 18-21. Attendees work on developing skills that prepare them to live and work in the community.
