PTA Presidents, Principals Kick off New Year

PTA Presidents and school principals from across the Shawnee Mission School District gathered for an annual breakfast hosted by the Shawnee Mission Area Council PTA on Sept. 13. The gathering provided an opportunity to kick off a new year of collaboration in support of students.

Superintendent Dr. Michelle Hubbard expressed gratitude for the ways everyone in the room works together to support students.

“Thank you for giving your time to our students and the community -- it really takes all of us to be one Shawnee Mission,” she added.

Dr. Hubbard spoke to the group about Real World Learning, provided an update on bond projects, and also spoke about focus this year on the idea that we are “One Shawnee Mission.”

Attendees also heard updates from the following speakers:

Tash Davis, SMAC PTA President, who welcomed all attendees

Denise Sultz, vice president of educational services, spoke about the importance of PTA

Lori Stanziola, Reflections chair, provided an update on the Reflections and Citizenship Writing competitions

Erin Woods, legislative coordinator, provided a legislative update

Jean Baucom, vice president of community services, provided an update on the SMAC PTA Clothing Exchange

Haley Jeffrey, Corinth PTA president and diversity, equity, and inclusion chair, provided details about a cultural night hosted by Corinth and Rosehill

Dr. Mary Sinclair, Board of Education president, spoke about the Board and expressed thanks to attendees

Kim Hinkle, Shawnee Mission Education Foundation executive director, spoke about opportunities available through the Foundation 

Dr. Ryan Flurry, principal of career education campuses and coordinator of career and technical education, provided details about Signature Programs and Real World Learning in the Shawnee Mission School District.

Presidents and Principals also took time to applaud the latest Shawnee Mission schools honored as Schools of Excellence by National PTA. These schools are Broken Arrow Elementary PTA, Mill Creek PTA, and Shawnee Mission East High School PTSA.

Shawnee Mission Area Council PTA (SMAC PTA) is a group of 45 local PTA units organized under the authority of Kansas PTA. It was first organized in 1922.
