Shawnee Mission School District (SMSD) National Merit Semifinalists and their families were formally congratulated and recognized for their outstanding academic achievement.

The National Merit Program has named 16 Shawnee Mission seniors as semifinalists in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program. These students took the 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants.

During a reception this week, high school principals introduced each student honoree. Each student shared their future goals and plans for college. They shared their goals in the fields of math, chemical engineering, marine biology, medical doctor and photography. Superintendent Dr. Michelle Hubbard, and David Stubblefield, associate superintendent of leadership and learning, applauded students and their family members for their accomplishments and successes.

Dr. Hubbard extended her congratulations, referring to the honorees as “national champions of academics.”

“Clearly, this is an outstanding group of students, and you should be proud of this amazing academic achievement,” Dr. Hubbard expressed. “Thank you for supporting your students with all of the stressful, late night AP, IB, ACT, SAT study sessions.” She encouraged all who were there to applaud family members for their support.

Dr. Hubbard wished the students well as they prepare for college and career and encouraged each to share a note of their gratitude with those who have influenced them along their way.

The encouragement continued as David Stubblefield also congratulated students achievements wishing “the very best in all future endeavors.”

Approximately 16,000 semifinalists were selected nationwide. These semifinalists represent less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors, according to a release from the National Merit program.

The following students earned semifinalist distinction and will have an opportunity to advance in the competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, worth about $30 million that will be offered next spring.
