October 5th is recognized as World Teacher’s Day, also referred to as International Teacher’s Day.  The day is celebrated globally to honor all teachers and the role they play in the lives of students.  The theme this year, the 28th anniversary of the observance, is “The Transformation of Education Begins with Teachers”.

The Status of Teachers Recommendation was signed by the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on this day in 1966. In 1994, UNESCO created International Teacher’s Day to commemorate the signing of the document.

Their focus is aimed at the issues faced by teachers. This guidance hoped to target and investigate the status and situation of teachers around the world.

Shawnee Mission School District teachers play an essential role in our students' lives, inspiring lifelong learning and making a difference in their well-being as they help them prepare for college and career success.

Please take time to thank an SMSD teacher.
