Important Announcement from the Board President

Dear Shawnee Mission Community:         

I am writing with mixed emotions to announce that superintendent Dr. Michelle Hubbard has announced her retirement, effective on July 1, 2024. In conversation with the Board, Dr. Hubbard has agreed to remain on contract for a period of up to three months following her retirement on July 1, 2024, in order to support a smooth transition to the new superintendent. Dr. Hubbard has led the Shawnee Mission School District over the past three years with a strong vision, boundless energy and deep purpose. She has emphasized the importance of high expectations for every child, and advocated tirelessly for all students in Shawnee Mission, and across the state of Kansas.

Dr. Hubbard is leaving Shawnee Mission in a strong position and with a shared commitment for authentic reflection and continuous improvement. She will lead us through the development of our second community-driven strategic planning cycle, poised to continue our growth and improvement. Although leadership transitions always create periods of uncertainty, I am confident that this Board is positioned to select a strong candidate to continue the work that Dr. Hubbard has led. 

Over the next several weeks, the Board will contract with a consultant to lead an internal search to select the next superintendent. The Board is seeking a leader who understands and values our community and is committed to our District and the Strategic Plan. The Board believes this decision will provide continuity for the work currently being done, as well as stability moving forward, and is consistent with our commitment to provide advancement opportunities for our talented staff. We are confident that we have qualified internal candidates to serve as the next superintendent of the Shawnee Mission School District. The Board plans to name and hire a new superintendent in early to mid February.

For now, on behalf of the Board of Education and the Shawnee Mission community, I want to express my deep appreciation for the 33 years that Dr. Hubbard has dedicated to education as a teacher, principal, assistant superintendent and a superintendent. She has led with wisdom and distinction, touching the lives of countless students in Shawnee Mission and across Kansas.

Estamos seguros de que tenemos candidatos internos calificados para servir como el próximo superintendente del Distrito Escolar de Shawnee Mission. La Junta planea nombrar y contratar a un nuevo superintendente a principios o mediados de febrero.

Por ahora, en nombre de la Junta de Educación y de la comunidad de ShawneeMission , quiero expresar mi profundo agradecimiento por los 33 años que la Dra. Hubbard ha dedicado a la educación como maestro, director, superintendente asistente y superintendente.
