Shawnee Mission Students Shine at eMagine Media Festival
Shawnee Mission School District

The Shawnee Mission School District (SMSD) Animation students had a night to remember at the eMagine Media Festival, showcasing their talent and creativity in the world of 2D Animation. With over 30 high schools participating and 450 entries across all categories, SMSD shined, placing first or second in each of the three 2D Animation categories.

Ben Gilman, a senior at SM East, took home two awards, winning first place in Animated Character with his creation, “Ferris Turnaround,” and second place in 2D Animation with “Sherlock and Watson.” Silas McCune, a sophomore at SM North, was also recognized, securing second place in Animated Story with “Hank and Frank.” Additionally, Kylee Boterf (SM South), Roslyn Carle (SM East), Milo Pflumm (SM Northwest), Mari Schluter (SM West), and Cil Hoch (SM East) placed in the top 5 in the Animated Story category as a group.

The program’s success continued with Ben’s impressive performance in the 11SecondClub contest, where he finished in the top 50, a remarkable feat in a competition that is not limited to high school students. Ben has also committed to pursuing Animation at Purdue University next year, a testament to his dedication and passion for the craft.

"We are incredibly proud of the achievements of these kids at the eMagine Festival," said Animation teacher, Enza Ketcham. "Their talent and hard work deserved to be recognized on a competitive platform, and we are excited to see them continue to excel."

Congratulations to the SMSD Animation Signature Program on this well-deserved success.
