Recently, the Shawnee Mission School District formally recognized four honorees who have completed their time in Post-High Transition Services.
On May 16, classmates, family members, educators, Dr. Mike Schumacher, superintendent, Dr. David Stubblefield, deputy superintendent, Sherry Dumolien, chief of special education, Pam Lewis, associate superintendent of leadership and learning, Dr. Jeremy Higgins, associate superintendent of human resources, Dr. Leigh Anne Neal, chief of early childhood learning and sustainability, David A. Smith, chief communications officer, Dr. Jennifer Dancer, assistant director of special education and Mario Garcia III, board of education member were all on hand to applaud the students on all they had accomplished.
Dr. Stubblefield delivered the commencement address. He commended the students for the paths they have walked and for the ways they exhibited courage, strength, and determination. He thanked all who supported the students and shared how the honorees inspire everyone by showing how potential is limitless when someone has the right support and mindset.
“We are so proud of you and can’t wait to see where you go next,” he told the honorees.
Each honoree was recognized individually during their ceremony. While in front of the crowd, they received their diploma as Amanda Wade, special education coordinator shared a personalized reflection about each person. The ceremony concluded with a round of applause for all of the honorees.
Post-High services are provided to individuals ages 18-21. While in the program they continue activities that prepare them to live and work in the community, including employment skills, recreation and leisure activities, community college classes, and volunteer projects.
