The Shawnee Mission North Patrons Gallery will soon host a show featuring the work of one of its most famous artistic graduates. This show will also provide an opportunity for individuals to support a new art student scholarship fund.

The show, displaying original watercolors by J.R. “Jim” Hamil, will hold an opening from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 9, 2024 in the Shawnee Mission North Patron’s Gallery, 7401 Johnson Drive.

Jim Hamil, who died in 2022, was a Kansas City area watercolor artist, graduated from Shawnee Mission North High school in 1954. In addition to working in the art department at Hallmark Cards, Hamil also opened an art studio, taught workshops, and earned numerous recognitions for his work.

The works in the show will be available for sale, with a portion of the proceeds supporting a new art student scholarship fund formed by the Patrons. Prints of Hamil’s painting of Shawnee Mission North High School will be available for $20 and proceeds will go to a scholarship fund. The scholarship will support a graduating senior engaged in the arts.

“This will be an interesting look into the past of SM North through the eyes of someone who was a student artist here and then went on to have a successful career,” Stephanie Dalley, visual arts teacher, expressed.

During the school year, the Patron’s Gallery is a dedicated space for visiting and student artists.
