Now is the time to get students ready to compete in The Next Great Idea! This is part of the district’s annual Research and Development (R&D) Forum, a celebration of all we do in the Shawnee Mission School District…Because Kids.
For the Next Great Idea, students are encouraged to think of a new product or solution to a problem they can pitch to a panel of judges this spring. There is a chance to win prize money to make the idea a reality. Initial pitch applications are due March 6, 2026. The initial application is easy - encourage students to create a one-minute video showing or telling us about their idea. Be sure to have them share what inspired their idea and why they believe it is needed. Click here for the link to the Next Great Idea webpage.

Questions to Prompt Brainstorming
Students are encouraged to think of a problem they would like to solve. Here are some questions that might help them launch a great idea!
· Do you have an idea for diagnosing or curing a disease?
· Is there something in your community you’d like to fix or make better?
· Is there a household task that you wish could be made easier?
· Have you ever thought about opening up your own business?
· Is there a local, national, or global need that you think might be helped by a new nonprofit?
General Pitch Ideas:
The next great idea might include the following- or something else. The possibilities are unlimited!
· A student-created app
· An invention
· A business plan
· An idea for a nonprofit organization

¡Ahora es el momento de preparar a los estudiantes para competir en La Próxima Gran Idea! Esto forma parte del Foro anual de Investigación y Desarrollo (R&D) del distrito, una celebración de todo lo que hacemos en el distrito escolar Shawnee Mission... Por Los Niños.
Para la próxima gran idea, se anima a los estudiantes a pensar en un nuevo producto o solución para un problema que puedan presentar a un jurado esta primavera. Existe la posibilidad de ganar premios en efectivo para hacer realidad la idea. Las solicitudes iniciales para presentar ideas deben entregarse el 6 de Marzo de 2026. La solicitud inicial es sencilla: anima a los estudiantes a crear un vídeo de un minuto mostrando o contándonos su idea.
