Nominations are open now to celebrate outstanding Shawnee Mission School District teachers. Those nominated are considered to be entrants in the Kansas Teacher of the Year program. The deadline to submit is Friday, September 5, 2025.

Each year Shawnee Mission is able to select one secondary and one elementary teacher to represent the district in the Kansas Teacher of the Year program. This year, Lara Caldwell, English teacher at Horizons was named a semifinalist in the Kansas Teacher of the Year program. Shauna Hammett, Apache IS Kindergarten Teacher represented the district at the elementary level.
To qualify the nominee must:
● Have completed three years in the Shawnee Mission School District
● Have completed five years in the profession
● Serve as a teacher (have a roster of students)
Colleagues, parents, students, and community members are all encouraged to submit a nomination. The Kansas Teacher of the Year program recognizes excellent teachers across the state. The Kansas Teacher of the Year advances to the National Teacher of the Year program. Shawnee Mission will also take time later this year to honor a Teacher of the Year for every Shawnee Mission school community.
