Members of the Shawnee Mission School District community are continuing an annual tradition of jumping into a freezing lake for a good cause. They invite anyone in our community to join in supporting the effort!

This team is called “Freezin’ for a Reason: Because Kids” and they will jump in a lake on February 28, 2026 to support Special Olympics Kansas.

Dr. Sherry Dumolien, associate superintendent of special education and strategic initiatives, has stepped up to guarantee SMSD has a representative taking the plunge! Dr. Michael Schumacher, Superintendent, will also take part. The event itself features a 5K as well as a variety of activities for anyone who wants to find an alternate way to support. Shawnee Mission students, families, and staff benefit from opportunities made possible through Special Olympics. The SMSD has previously been recognized for having the most participants at the event, so there is hope for another strong turnout.
