Interest Form Open for SMSD AI Work Group

The Shawnee Mission School District is in the process of developing a policy related to artificial intelligence (AI).

As part of this process, Superintendent Dr. Michael Schumacher announced the formation of a Superintendent’s work group focused on AI. Students, families, staff, and community members interested in joining the work group are invited to complete an interest form. Click here for the SMSD AI Work Group Interest Form.

Those interested are encouraged to submit their interest by no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 28, 2026.

The process and next steps will include:

1. Research & Study: The work group will review emerging best practices, legal considerations, and current research on AI in K-12 education.
2. Draft Policy: The group will draft advisory policy language specific to student access and usage of AI.
3. Policy Review: The Superintendent will review and consider the group's recommendations and present the draft policy to the Policy Review Committee for study and consideration.

The Group will include representative voices and perspectives from each of SMSD's 5 feeder patterns (approx. 20-25 participants total). Whether you are interested in serving yourself or would like to nominate someone else, we appreciate your willingness to support this important work.

El Distrito Escolar Shawnee Mission está en proceso de desarrollar una política relacionada con la inteligencia artificial (IA).

Como parte de este proceso, el Superintendente Dr. Michael Schumacher anunció la formación de un grupo de trabajo del Superintendente enfocado en la IA. Se invita a estudiantes, familias, personal y miembros de la comunidad interesados en unirse al grupo de trabajo a llenar un formulario de interés. Se recomienda a quienes estén interesados a enviar su interés a más tardar a las 5 p.m. del Viernes 28 de Agosto de 2026.

El proceso y los siguientes pasos incluirán:

1. Investigación y Estudio: El grupo de trabajo revisará las mejores prácticas emergentes, consideraciones legales y la investigación actual sobre IA en la educación K-12.
2. Proyecto de Política: El grupo elaborará un texto consultivo con directrices específicas sobre el acceso y el uso de la IA por parte de los estudiantes.
3. Revisión de Políticas: El Superintendente revisará y considerará las recomendaciones del grupo y presentará el proyecto de política al Comité de Revisión de Políticas para su estudio y consideración.

El Grupo incluirá voces y perspectivas representativas de cada uno de los 5 patrones de area de SMSD (aproximadamente 20-25 participantes en total). Tanto si le interesa participar personalmente o si desea nominar a otra persona, agradecemos su disposición a apoyar esta importante labor.
