The Shawnee Mission School District (SMSD) and NEA-Shawnee Mission (teacher association) completed a professionally led mediation process today without an agreement for the 2019-2020 school year. The next step, as outlined by state statute, is a fact-finding process.

The district offered a two-year contract. The contract offer included a 3.22% increase in year one and 3.65% increase in year two for total teacher compensation and benefits. This represents 72% of all new money received by SMSD from the state for the fiscal years 2019-2020 and 2020-2021. The two-year contract would have allowed the district to stabilize individual health care costs for all employees.

“The Board of Education remains committed to honoring the hard work and dedication of our SMSD teachers,” said David A. Smith, chief communications officer. “The Board is committed to expeditiously reaching an agreement which continues to place SMSD educators at or near the top of state compensation levels while continuing to be fiscally responsible with taxpayer dollars.”
