In late April, building tours and a dedication ceremony were hosted for all the students, families, staff, and community members at the new school facility.

The Indian Woods Middle School Jazz Band welcomed guests and members of the PTA assisted with refreshments. Families and community members toured the classrooms, specials classrooms, library, and playground.

The ceremony opened with Girls Den from Cub Scout Pack 3197 presenting the flags and leading the pledge. The Brookwood Fifth-Grade Choir and Hand Chimes accompanied the “Star Spangled Banner” and the “Brookwood School Song.”

Kevin Frick, Brookwood principal, greeted guests and thanked faculty members for their time, support, and dedication through the moving process. Several sixth-grade students shared their thanks with remarks. Zaylee Zahabi thanked building designers for considering wheelchair access and movement in their plans, noting that the cement floor is much easier to maneuver rather than carpet.

Leawood City Councilmember, Jim Rawlings, welcomed the Brookwood community to Leawood. Dr. Mike Fulton, superintendent, thanked community members for their support of the school district and the building of the new facility.

Board President Brad Stratton presented Frick with a dedication plaque. And Sara Goodburn, board member, shared some memories as a Brookwood alumna.

In closing, Frick reminded everyone of the school slogan, “Once a Beaver, Always a Beaver!”

The Brookwood building was funded by bond proceeds from the sale of general obligation bonds that were authorized as part of the bond issue approved by members of the community in 2015.
