A group of Corinth students are using their writing skills to help children who are going through a difficult chapter in their lives.
During the school year, these incoming third-graders started a club called “Every Book is Awesome.” Together, they wrote original books and stories. This summer they hosted a book sale of their original works and will donate what they earned to Children’s Mercy Hospital.
Students were first inspired to create the books in Melissa Moteni’s second-grade classroom. In the room, she provided a basket of blank books for student use. Each book provided empty pages for students to write poems, illustrate cartoons, and write their own books. The writing activity often gave Molteni and the students a way to discuss book genres, author planning and purpose, and voice.
The students held their sale in a local park and created their own bookmarks and signs to advertise within their community.
