Girls Tennis Stands Out in Shawnee Mission High Schools

Shawnee Mission East girls tennis share the state 6A championship title, as KSHSAA declared a first time co-championship in girls tennis. The co-championship is shared with Blue Valley North.

“We are super excited for the kids and coaches to be Kansas 6A state champions.  The girls worked hard and played great in the tournament.  We are so happy that KSHSAA honored both teams for their hard work and effort,” shares Shawnee Mission East Athletic Director, Debbie Katzfey. 

A freshman duo at Shawnee Mission East is setting a precedent for excellence.  Bryson Langford and Greta Stechschulte won the Kansas Class 6A tennis state doubles championships. Both said their preparation was key to winning the state title.  

Shawnee Mission North experienced an increase in tennis participants.  Jon Durham, SMN Varsity Tennis Coach shared, “We are pleased that the size of the program doubled with most of the newcomers learning tennis for the first time.”

Shawnee Mission Northwest’s doubles team of, Michaela Crowe and Naeley Torline, placed 8th at State, 3rd at regionals, and 5th at Sunflower League.

At Shawnee Mission South, Junior’s Madison Hanna and Mary Novak qualified for state in doubles and Senior Mariana Ochoa Guerra finished 12th at state in singles.
