Hocker Grove Successfully Defends Book Battle Championship
Shawnee Mission School District

For the second consecutive year, Hocker Grove Middle School students won the districtwide middle school Battle of the Books tournament.

Students from all Shawnee Mission middle schools gathered to answer trivia questions about books from the William Allen White Children’s Book Award Master List. To prepare, students read fiction and nonfiction selections and meet as a team to practice likely questions and responses.

This is the fifth year middle school library media specialists hosted the event for Shawnee Mission students. The event provides important opportunity for students to join as a team and experience friendly competition, Carol Edds, Hocker Grove library media specialist said.

“We strongly believe that it is important for students to be able to read for pleasure and this competition makes it even more enjoyable,” she said. “The experience improves reading and social skills and also teaches them the value of teamwork.”

The tournament results are as follows:

First place: Hocker Grove Team #2

Second place:  a tie between Indian Hills Team #1 and Hocker Grove Team #1

Third place: a tie between Trailridge Team #1 and Indian Hills Team #2
