Hocker Grove Teacher Named Outstanding Art Educator

KAEA Outstanding Art Educator
Shawnee Mission School District

The Kansas Art Education Association named Alyssa Passmore, art teacher at Hocker Grove Middle School, the Outstanding Middle Level Art Educator of the Year.

This award will be presented to Passmore in October.

Passmore will be honored for the many ways she has engaged students and community members in art and art education. Passmore and students at Hocker Grove recently worked with the school art club, a local street artist, and students to create a community-based mural. Ultimately, it utilized the help of more than 100 community members, ranging in age from six to 70 years old.

Passmore finds many opportunities like these to engage and support in Hocker Grove’s mission, principal Chris Kase said.

“Her passion for her content is only surpassed by her desire to see students and our school shine,” he said.

Passmore has created and sponsored an arts club at each of the schools where she has worked and enjoys serving as a volleyball coach at Hocker Grove.

In addition to her work as an art educator, has served as a member of Hocker Grove’s Building Leadership Team, as a Sources of Strength mentor, and as a Deep Equity Trainer. Associate Principal, Matt Engler, shares that Passmore “has helped to build a culture that fosters opportunities for all students of any interest to find a place to excel.”

Passmore has been a  member of the National Art Education Association since her time in college. She continuously volunteers at the Kansas Art Education Professional Development Conference on topics ranging from “Diverse Perspectives in Art” to “Printmaking on a Budget.”
