Katie Black, a social studies teacher at Horizons High School, is the March winner of the Read to Achieve award. Representatives from the Kansas National Education Association (KNEA) and KCTV 5 surprised Black in her classroom to make the announcement.

Dakota Pfeiffer, who graduated in December, nominated Black because “she always encourages everyone to step outside of their comfort zone.”

In her nomination letter, Pfeiffer wrote, “Ms. Black is an inspiration for every single student who has struggled with being different. She has always been a positive light and encouraged each and every student to be the best person. She has been a wonderful role model and mentor.”

Black received a check for $1,000 as part of her recognition.

“Helping students improve their literacy skills is such an integral part of what I try to do,” Black said. “Social Studies exists to develop responsible citizenship in our youth. Literacy allows our youth to learn about and navigate their world and effectively communicate their viewpoints. I am so touched that Dakota nominated me for this award! There is nothing better than receiving reassurance from students that what I am doing every day is making an impact.”
