Brandi Newry, school psychologist at Trailridge and Indian Woods Middle Schools was the first recipient of a new honor given to show appreciation for special education team members.

Debra DuPree, associate coordinator for secondary schools, presented this inaugural Golden Eagle award to Newry this week. DuPree said Newry has exceptional ability to overcome challenges, excellent communication skills, and builds strong relationships with students and their family members.

“Brandi gets out of her office and gets to know her students and their families,” DuPree said. “She has a genuine and compassionate interest in working outside of the box to solve problems. Administrators, teachers, and students agree she proactively provides positive encouragement.

Newry received a trophy and a certificate. The award is named the “Golden Eagle” because it is symbolic of how its recipients inspire learners to soar, Dupree said.

“When I am in the school with Brandi, walking down the hall, it is clear she knows the students and they know her,” Dupree said. “She is very involved in their day-to-day activities at middle school.”

Newry, who has served in the profession for 12 years, expressed gratitude through tears.

Special Education department leaders launched this new recognition program for secondary staff members in our schools. The Golden Eagle Award will be given to a special education staff member for their above-and-beyond contributions.
