Lenexa Hills Elementary Hosts Dedication Ceremony

Lenexa Hills Elementary School hosted students, families, and community members as they dedicated the new school.

The school community gathered on Thursday to officially dedicate the new learning space. Students led tours of their new school that includes a MakerSpace. There, students demonstrated several Rube Goldberg machines under construction.

Mike Brewer, principal, welcomed everyone to the ceremony and also talked to attendees about the school’s mission and culture.

“Thank you to everyone for helping us build a culture where it is our goal to help all students find their voice,” Brewer said.

Students also played a significant role in the ceremony. Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts led the Pledge of Allegiance and a student-led choir helped close the ceremony under the direction of their music teachers Angie Lunetta and Alexandra Drake. Audrey Rasmuss, sixth-grader thanked the staff, families, and community members for making Lenexa Hills a place where students look forward to going to school every morning.

Superintendent Mike Fulton and Board of Education Vice President Heather Ousley thanked the community for their support that made the new school possible.  Fulton addressed the students directly, saying the building was built for them. Ousley presented the dedication plaque to Brewer.

“Our hope is this new school will help each and every student find their own personal success,” Ousley said.

The new building, located at 8650 Haven Street, brings the total number of Shawnee Mission elementary schools to 34. The building was constructed as part of a $223 million bond issue approved by local voters in 2015. One new elementary school facility has now been built or rebuilt in each high school attendance area of the district as part of this bond.
