Shawnee Mission’s newest elementary school, Lenexa Hills, was honored by the Johnson County Board of County Commissioners for schoolwide sustainability efforts.

They were presented with a Reinvest, Rethink, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle (R5) certification. The certification recognizes community partners for outstanding environmental achievements.

Lenexa Hills, which opened in 2018, joins the Shawnee Mission School District, and all early childhood, elementary, and secondary schools, and the Center for Academic Achievement (CAA) that have received R5 awards, specifically for composting and recycling efforts. All Shawnee Mission schools and the CAA participate in recycling and composting.

Principal Mike Brewer accepted the recognition on behalf of the Lenexa Hills school community. Back at the Lenexa Hills building, students celebrated the recognition by ringing the school bell. This bell is rung by students when they reach a significant goal they have set and for schoolwide accomplishments.
