After a competition that advanced to two tie-breakers, the Shawnee Mission School District has a new middle school Battle of the Books champion.

Readers from all Shawnee Mission middle schools recently gathered at Indian Hills Middle School to demonstrate their book-related knowledge. Competitors were presented with trivia questions based on  books they read from the 2018-19 William Allen White Children’s Book Award Master List.

Teams began work in the fall by reading the books and practicing responses to possible trivia questions. The questions related to characters, plots, and other facts related to the nominated books.

On  Jan. 16, students gathered for competition in the library filled with an audience of parents, staff members, and supportive individuals.

A team of Hocker Grove students earned the traveling championship trophy presented at the competition. A team of Indian Hills students earned second-place.

This fall, the Hocker Grove teams were sponsored by Carol Edds, librarian.

She said the teams were strong because they worked well together and were made up of “great readers” who seemed to enjoy meeting to talk about books.
