Middle School Students Spend Summer Days Designing and Engineering

It was a week of brainstorming solutions and bringing new ideas to life for a group of Shawnee Mission School District middle school students.

An engineering camp, held at the Center for Academic Achievement and taught by Greg Thiel, Engineering Signature Program instructor, brought incoming seventh and eighth-graders together to explore the field of engineering.

During the week they practiced their problem-solving and building skills by constructing bridges and cars. On June 14, they tested how well their cars, propelled by a fan and plastic-bag sails, moved across their engineered bridges.

Students helped evaluate the efficiency of the bridges in a friendly competition in front of applauding family members and friends who were invited to enjoy the results of their work.
