Shawnee Mission School District

Mill Creek students recently participated in their first Community Connection Fair.  See video here.

The event opened with the mayor of Lenexa greeting students and sharing details about government service and public works careers,.

Kindergartners and first graders attended sessions with the Kansas City Zoo, and a local artist, presented by Mill Creek parents.

Second through sixth grade students were encouraged to review the list of over 50 presenters with their parents, in preparation to attend three career sessions of their choice.

Students had the opportunity to ask questions from their presenters like, “Do you ever worry about yourself when you are storm chasing”, asked to a meteorologist, and “How does the food turn into compost”, asked to a Wildlife Biologist.

The goal of the event, related to the district’s college and career readiness strategic plan objective, is to increase students’ knowledge about a variety of careers and leadership opportunities.

“The Community Connection Fair was a wonderful opportunity to continue to build and strengthen our partnerships between the school and our community,” Michelle Lord, Mill Creek principal, noted.
