This week, children rode bikes, walked, or were driven by a parent to pick up breakfast and lunch at four schools in the Shawnee Mission School District. Free breakfast and lunch for children ages 1-18 began and will continue through May.
“Food service staff is thrilled to be able to provide meals to children during this time,” Nancy Coughenour, director of food services said. “We appreciate the outpouring of support that we have received.”
The meal program has so far served more than 1,000 children each day from the four school locations. They include:
- Comanche Elementary, 8200 Grant St., Overland Park
- Rosehill Elementary, 9801 Rosehill, Lenexa
- Shawanoe Elementary, 11230 W. 75th St., Shawnee
- Hocker Grove Middle School, 10400 Johnson Dr., Shawnee
Each child may have one breakfast and one lunch bag. Food service is provided from 10:30-11:30, Monday through Friday.
Coughenour reassured families that the food service staff members are keeping social distance and following guidelines for food handling and handwashing. District security and social workers have also provided support at the schools make sure food was safely distributed to all who arrived.
