As Rushton Elementary students attended lunch on Sept. 11, they were joined by a group of special guests.

Police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical service responders who serve the City of Mission, were invited by students, staff, and parents to eat lunch at the school.

It’s a tradition that has continued at the school for more than 15 years. In addition to eating lunch, some students shared artwork they had created as a thank you to those who serve. Each year the event helps accentuate the close-knit community in Mission and helps students become more aware of the people who serve in their city, Kristy Fornal, principal said.

“They are such positive role models for our students,” she said.

Todd Kerkhoff, a firefighter in Mission, said that he and his colleagues enjoy attending each year as a way to become more acquainted with members of the community.
