Scholarship Shawnee Mission Presents Offers to Horizons Students
Shawnee Mission School District

A group of Horizons High School students recently learned they have scholarship offers with their name on them. In a surprise announcement, scholarship offers totaling $572,000 were presented to 11 students.

The offers are part of the Scholarship Shawnee Mission program provided through the Shawnee Mission Education Foundation. Click here to see a video.

Tamaryia West, senior, who is considering a career as a nurse practitioner, was among the recipients surprised with an offer.

“It’s an eye-opener and it means I have options, which I’m very happy about,” West said.

The scholarship offers came from Newman University, one of 36 colleges and universities actively recruiting Shawnee Mission students to attend

The Shawnee Mission Education Foundation started Scholarship Shawnee Mission in the fall. So far, more than 1,200 seniors across the district received scholarship offers valued at $737 million. The number of universities offering scholarships to Shawnee Mission students through the program continues to grow, said Edward Márquez, program officer for the Shawnee Mission Education Foundation.

A primary goal of the program is to eliminate barriers students often face in the college application and admission process.

“The future of this program will mean more opportunities for our students,” Márquez said. “As it grows, so do dollar amounts for our students and the options students have when selecting what college, university, or perhaps technical school they would like to attend.”

The letters, written to let students know they are wanted by colleges and universities, will hopefully help push students toward their college and career goals, Laura Eshelman, Horizons counselor said.

“I hope they will seriously think about furthering their education so they will have more opportunities in their adult life,” she said.
