Recently a team of four Shawnee Mission East students took second place in the 18th Annual Academic WorldQuest competition.
Team members Kara Auvray and Grant Colvin, seniors, and Sophie Rice and Charlie Birt, juniors, researched 10 global topics. The topics included Germany 30 Years after the Wall, South Korea, China’s Belt and Road Initiative, and Qatar. They were responsible for answering 100 questions in ten categories at the metro competition.
The annual competition is sponsored by the International Relations Council of Kansas City. The team earned Amazon gift cards and Royals tickets and plan to win first place next year for a chance to compete in the national event in Washington, D.C.
The World Affairs Councils of America, established in 1986 in Washington, D.C., sponsors the competition. This youth education program is a fast-paced team competition for high school students. Academic WorldQuest tests players knowledge of current international politics, geography, global economics, history, and world culture.
