Shawnee Mission High School Students Honored for Aspirations in Computing

The National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT) will recognize three Shawnee Mission students for their accomplishments in computing and technology.

The students are being acknowledged by the NCWIT’s Western Missouri and Kansas Affiliate for their outstanding aptitude and interest in technology and computing, leadership ability, academic history, and plans for post-secondary education.

Hannah Poe, a Shawnee Mission South High School sophomore, will receive the NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing.  Poe, a Project Lead the Way Engineering student, serves as a coding mentor to students and is part of a program called SHEnovators that provides high school students access to resources to pursue tech interests. Elise Lovell, a Shawnee Mission South High School senior will receive an Honorable Mention. Lindsey Chiu, a Shawnee Mission South High School junior will receive a Rising Star Award.

“With technology jobs projected to grow faster than all other job sectors in the next decade, it’s imperative that we nurture the computing aspirations of women, who will make up half the professional workforce,” said Lucy Sanders, CEO and Co-founder of NCWIT wrote in a press release.  “This award allows us to recognize and encourage talent that might otherwise be overlooked.”

These honorees will be recognized at a reception held at Johnson County Community College later this month.
