A group of Shawnee Mission North students were honored this spring for their strong college and career preparation.
These students were claimed medals and trophies in the America’s Graduates-Kansas (JAG-K) Region Seven Career Development Conference. Students also qualified to advance to state competition.
Students competed in events demonstrating skill in public speaking, math, employability, community service, and project-based learning. The competition drew students from across the Kansas City area.
Individual winners include:
Isabelle Dominguez and Alex Mireles, 9-10th grade, first place, poster project
Emili Quezada and Aliyah Marshall, 11-12th grade, first place, students for service project
Alyssa Grant, 9-10th grade, first place, project based learning
Isabelle Dominguez and Shakirah Fileto, 9-10th grade, second place, project based learning.
Stacia Nelson, 11-12th grade, second place, employability skills
Mickenzy Brown, 11-12th grade, first place, public speaking
Payten Bush, 9-10th grade, alternate, students for service project
Vale Osorio, 11-12th grade, alternate, Senior Portfolio
The regional competitions were conducted virtually, due to COVID-19. Students placing in the top four in each category earned a medal, and the top three in each event qualified for the state competition, held virtually on May 20.
State winners include:
Emili Quezada and Aliyah Marshall, 11-12th grade third place, students for service project
Isabelle Dominguez and Alex Mireles, 9-10th grade, sixth place, poster project
The region also held student leader elections, resulting in both President and Vice-President being from Shawnee Mission North.

Both students will be in the SM North 11-12 JAG-K program next year.
The SM North 11-12 grade JAG-K program, led by Career Specialist, Michael Giarla, placed second, with the SM North High School 9-10 grade JAG-K program led by Career Specialist, Amanda Polking, placed third as a team in the competition.
“The conference is a great opportunity for our students to demonstrate some of the skills they have gained in JAG-K,” said Amanda Polking, Shawnee Mission North High School 9-10 JAG-K Career Specialist.
JAG-K is a multi-year, in-school program for students in grades seven through 12 offering tools to successfully transition students into post-secondary school, the military, or directly into the workforce with marketable skills. JAG-K Career Specialists work to help students overcome challenges and barriers to achieve personal success through a nationally accredited evidence-based model.
