Kansas Commissioner of Education Dr. Randy Watson announced that Shawnee Mission Northwest is one of 10 schools in the state to be recognized for the civic engagement opportunities they offer students.

The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) Civic Advocacy Network (CAN) will honor the high school as a CAN  School of Excellence in September. The honor is given to recognize schools that actively involve students in civic engagement opportunities with the goal of promoting engagement as part of the student experience.

Shawnee Mission Northwest is being recognized not just for courses offered, but also for the many ways students are engaged in community service and extracurricular offerings, Christin LaMourie, social studies teacher said. The opportunities include everything from the school’s Cougar Community Commitment (CCC) community service class, to opportunities to participate in student government, and the engagement of students through programs like Student Council and National Honor Society.

“We are very proud that at Shawnee Mission Northwest, engagement doesn’t just happen in Social Studies classrooms,” she said. “It is about civically engaging students on many levels and in many different ways. It is everywhere.”

Shawnee Mission Northwest will be honored during a Constitution Day event in Topeka this September.
