The Board of County Commissioners of Johnson County, Kansas invited Connie Springfield, associate principal, and several students from Shawnee Mission Northwest to join them as they signed a proclamation this month.

The county formally recognized Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 as Hispanic Heritage Month, and as part of their proclamation, encouraged all citizens to recognize and participate in its observance.

Ed Eilert, board chairman, presented the proclamation to Springfield and thanked her for the work she does in the community and as an educator.

Yairee Juarez, a Shawnee Mission Northwest senior, also spoke at the meeting, sharing thoughts about what Hispanic Heritage Month means to her and students in her generation.
