Shawnee Mission Students Excel at Greater Kansas City Science and Engineering Fair

Many of the highest honors presented at this year’s Greater Kansas City Science and Engineering Fair (GKSEF) were presented to Shawnee Mission School District students.

Of the three Grand Awards presented at the fair, two were presented to Shawnee Mission high school students. Peyton Panovich, a senior Biotechnology Signature Program and Shawnee Mission West High School student earned a Grand Award and several recognitions for her research related to colon cancer. Amy Qiang, a senior Biotechnology Signature Program  and Shawnee Mission West High School student, earned a Grand Award and several recognitions for her research related to mitochondrial function. Panovich and Qiang and have been invited to advance to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Arizona in May.

Elizabeth Falkner, a Shawnee Mission East junior and Biotechnology Signature Program student, Juan Pineda Gomez, a Shawnee Mission Northwest junior and Biotechnology Signature Program student, and Panovich were also named Kansas BioGENEius Finalists.

Elementary, middle, and high school students from across the district were also presented with numerous honors for their work.
