Shawnee Mission Students Honored with Princeton Prize in Race Relations

Hananeel Morinville, a sophomore at Shawnee Mission North High School, will be presented with the 2019 Princeton Prize in Race Relations for the Greater Kansas City Area. Olivia Henry, a junior at Shawnee Mission East, will be presented with a Certificate of Accomplishment.

These students were selected in recognition of their work to improve harmony and understanding among all groups in their schools and communities.

Morinville is recognized for her work in establishing the Black Student Union at Shawnee Mission North and leadership within the school’s Harmony Club. “Her tireless efforts led to a greater sense of camaraderie and belonging which extended throughout the entire school, “ Debbie Scott Williams, co-chair of the Greater Kansas City Committee of the Princeton Prize in Race Relations. Henry will be honored with a Certificate of Accomplishment for her work within various initiatives, including Race Project KC.

These Shawnee Mission students will be recognized at an awards ceremony this April. Morinville also has been invited to attend a Symposium on Race at Princeton University later this month and will meet prizewinners from across the country.  

The Princeton Prize in Race Relations is developed and operated by Princeton University alumni and recognizes students across the country who make positive, significant improvements in race relations at their schools or in their communities.
