The Kansas City Star judges the nominees in three separate rounds. During each round, the student-athletes are evaluated 45% on athletics, 35% on academics, 10% on extra-curricular participation, such as community service and student government, and 10% on overall impact on school environment. The overall impact is usually summarized in an endorsement from a faculty member.
